Setup for Older Laptop Running Windows 98?
Posted by Jack Barrett on September 26th, 2005

I want to setup a home network with one pc running XP Pro and a laptop
running 98. The laptop will be for my kids to access IM, email and surf for
homework.

How do I get the laptop to see the pc and get internet?

Here are the details of my network:

Main pc running XP Pro with a Netgear router. The laptop will be plugged
into the router.

Thanks in advance.

Jack,

The simplest solution would be for the laptop to use the router as the gateway,
just as the Main PC connected to it. Does the Main PC get settings from DHCP on
the router? If so, setup the laptop as a DHCP client too.

File sharing between the two computers may be another issue. There are several
challenges to deal with. Start with these articles:

An easy solution is to run XP's Network Setup Wizard on the laptop, as
described here:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...rksetupwiz.htm

If the Wizard detects the router's shared Internet connection, tell it
to use that. Otherwise, tell the Wizard that the computer connects to
the Internet through a residential gateway.

You can also make the network settings manually on the laptop. Go to
Control Panel | Network and:

1. Add these components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).
