unable to connect to internet on remote computer

i have connected my laptop and desktop directly via a cat5e cross over cable.
my desktop is connected to aol broadband via a usb modem. i am able to access
the shared drives on both computers remotely but it will only allow me to
connect to the internet on the desktop.

what settings do i need to change on both computers so i can access the
internet on my laptop. when i go into the network devices on the laptop it
has my desktop setup as the internet gateway.

can anyone help?

Do some diagnostics for us please.
From a command window:
1. Ping www.yahoo.com.
2. Ping 66.94.230.33.
3. Report success / exact text of error messages.
From your browser:
1. Browse www.yahoo.com.
2. Browse 66.94.230.33.
3. Report success / exact text of error messages.

NOTE: AOL Broadband can be very problematic. In theory, their DSL is
standard PPOE and you should be able to get this to work (in practice, I've
seen problems). If you're using AOL Cable service, as I understand it, AOL
cable service is not standard and cannot be shared through normal routers or
ICS processes.

I did what you said. here are the error messages.

1. ping request could not find host www.yahoo.co.uk. Please check the name
and try again.

2. pinging 66.94.230.33 with 32 bytes of data

request timed out
request timed out
request timed out

ping statistics for 66.94.230.33:
packet: sent= 4, received= 0, lost= 4 (100%)

'internet explorer could not open the search page'

2. 1. dialog box:
'internet explorer could not open the search page'


Is there any way of getting my cable aol to connect through IE rather than
having to open the aol explorer? would that help?

OK, you definitely are not connecting.

Did you run the Network Setup Wizard? On the desktop computer, did you select
"This computer connects directly to the Internet. ..."? On the laptop, did you
select "This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my
network"?

Let's take a look at "ipconfig /all" from both computers.

Internet Explorer should work quite well with AOL. Just setup the connection
properly (Tools - Internet Options - Connections).
