Unable to map drive
Posted by chessexpert on November 20th, 2007

XP SP2 computer is able to view unc share to alias name, but is unable to map
a drive to that exact name (network path not found). Other XP SP2 computers
(same OU, so getting same policies) are not having this issue. The webclient
service is running. Tried rebooting, net use command. When trying to map
drive via GUI, able to browse the entire path and place in the path box, but
get the same error after hitting "Finish".

Alias? Do you mean share?

What is the exact text of the error message?

What about

net use x: \\computer\share /user:computer\username

?

It is a web share, not a windows share. I can map a drive to this exact
location on other computers. The name that I map to is not the name of the
computer; rather it is an alias in DNS. I get the same error if I use the ip
address in front of the web share.

Ah. I don't use those, so I'm not sure how they differe.

Why, just out of random curiosity?

Then it isn't the alias/cname that's the issue, clearly. What else is
different about this PC from one that works? Are you using DHCP for all your
computers?
