Unable to obtain DNS Server address automatically
Posted by PaulH on May 15th, 2006

Here's a strange one. I've been setting up 3 PC a wireless network with
Netgear router. two PCs with XP home, one with XP prof. One of the XP
machines used to have AOL Broadband. We have migrated to another ISP,
uninstalled AOL software and connected to the router, which works fine with
the other two machines.

This ex-AOL XP machine refuses to obtain the DNS Server address
automatically. and so as such I can ping the other machines, I can ping
yahoo.com, but it refuses to display the web pages throught the browser. If I
connect to the router using a network cable, and the NIC, it displays fine. I
have found the DNS server address listed in the router's addresses, and if I
enter them into the TCP/IP properties it works OK.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the USB WLAN adapter. I have refreshed
the Winsock catalog, I have "repaired" the Windows installation using the
Installation disk, None of this has allowed it to get the DNS Server Address
automatically.

i'm concerned that it might effect other stuff down the line.

Any Ideas?
