Win XP Pro SP1. Cannot create new connection.
Posted by Les on June 14th, 2008

Hi,

I have reinstalled Win XP Pro onto an existing PC. It should be a clean
install, because I did a full disk re-format as part of the installation. It
has installed SP1.

The installation is OK, except I cannot connect to the LAN. There is a 1394
Connection which is "enabled" and "connected". However I cannot create a new
LAN connection. I follow the "Create a New Connection" wizard, all looks
fine, but when I reboot (as requested) there is no new connection. Other
Windows & Linux machines on the same LAN work fine, using either DHCP or
fixed IP address.

I tested the PC itself by booting Linux from a CD - the LAN connection works
fine therefore the hardware is all OK.

The account I am using is an admin, with no password. The firewall appears
to be off (although I can't find where you might change that).

What should I do now ???

Thanks,

Hello,

Mea Culpa. Windows did not automatically install a driver for the on-board
Intel NIC. Once I did that manually, it was fine.

Yes I was ignorant, however I have to say, SuSE Linux did a much better job
than Windows in this case.
