- Workgroup is not accessible

I've seen many posts about this problem, but none of the solutions seem to
fit my particular case. I hope someone can help...
I'm trying to build my first home network using a Dell desktop and Dell
laptop, both running XP Home SP2. My modem-router is a Belkin ADSL2+ Modem
Router (Wireless G+ MIMO). The desktop is connected via an RJ45 LAN port;
the laptop via an SMC wireless cardbus adapter. Both computers have good
internet connectivity.
I ran the XP networking wizard and established a common workgroup called
ROBLESNET. The computers are named Mars (desktop) and Venus (laptop).
When I try to View Workgroup Computers, one of two things happens:
1) I get the error message: "ROBLESNET is not accessible. You might not
have permission..."
or
2) I can only view the computer I am working on, but not the other machine.
Interestingly, if the desktop gives me response #1, then the laptop gives
response #2, and vice versa.
The desktop is running Kaspersky Internet Security. In the firewall
options, the IP address 192.168.2.0 is set to "Trusted". In any case,
disabling Kaspersky has had no effect on my results. The Windows firewall
for this computer is turned off.
The laptop was running a trial version of Kaspersky, which recently expired.
I uninstalled it to see whether it was causing a conflict, but that did not
solve the problem. I have also disabled the Windows firewall on the laptop
to no effect.
I can reliably ping each computer from itself and from the other, either by
IP address or by name. Using the Windows "Search" feature, I have actually
managed to view the other computer and access files on the other machine, but
I cannot do this reliably and the access times are very slow. Nevertheless,
I still cannot view the other computer in the workgroup from the Explorer and
cannot map drives to resources on the other machine.

To my uneducated eye, the CPSSERV output for Mars looks pretty bad, but when
I check the status of the Services in the Computer Management utility, all of
the key services appear to running fine (Automatic -- Started).

you have the Node Type listed as "unknown" Follow these directions to change
the Node Type to "Hybrid". Do it on both computers and see if that fixes the
problem. If it doesn't you can always delete the DWORD value that you just
created in the registry.
1- Open dos prompt, type ipconfig -all.
2- Look at the 'Node Type' it probably says Peer-Peer or something (this is
what mine said) ... we want it to say 'Hybrid'
3- Press 'Start' button > Run... > In the box type regedit. This opens your
system's registry.
4- Navigate the tree to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/NetBT/Parameters
5- Rt. mouse click and select New > DWORD Value
6- Name it 'NodeType' (without the quotes)
7- Rt. mouse click on it and select Modify
8- Set Value Data to '8' (no quotes)
9- Leave Base alone. 'Hexadecimal' should be selected
10- Press 'ok'
11- Close regedit and reboot. (Your done!)

Thanks for the suggestions.
Regarding el Diablo's suggestion, I have verified that both machines are set
up as b-nodes, not peer-to-peer, so that's not the issue (but thanks anyway).
Now I have uninstalled Kaspersky, and that has partially solved the problem.
I can now view both workgroup computers from either machine. (Once my
network is running smoothly, I would like to reinstall the anti-virus...I
hope a new installation will adapt to the network.)
Chuck was correct in that I seem to have multiple problems because the thing
is still not working right. Now Mars (desktop) can smoothly access shared
folders on Venus (laptop), but the converse is not true. Now I get this
error message on the laptop: "\\Mars is not accessible. You might not have
permission...The Server service is not started." The Server service,
however, is listed as "Automatic - Started" in the Computer Management
utility, so I don't understand what's happening.
I found this note on the Microsoft Knowledge Base: "If you can ping a
NetBIOS name but cannot use the NET command, follow these steps:
1. If this occurs only across a router, check to see if TCP Port 139 is
enabled.
The NET commands and the Map Network Drive command in Windows rely on TCP
Port 139. To enable this port the administrator of the router should be
contacted. If further help is needed, contact the router manufacturer."
Could this be my problem? How do I verify that port 139 is open on my
Belkin router?

Thanks for the suggestions.
Regarding el Diablo's suggestion, I have verified that both machines are set
up as b-nodes, not peer-to-peer, so that's not the issue (but thanks anyway).
Now I have uninstalled Kaspersky, and that has partially solved the problem.
I can now view both workgroup computers from either machine. (Once my
network is running smoothly, I would like to reinstall the anti-virus...I
hope a new installation will adapt to the network.)
Chuck was correct in that I seem to have multiple problems because the thing
is still not working right. Now Mars (desktop) can smoothly access shared
folders on Venus (laptop), but the converse is not true. Now I get this
error message on the laptop: "\\Mars is not accessible. You might not have
permission...The Server service is not started." The Server service,
however, is listed as "Automatic - Started" in the Computer Management
utility, so I don't understand what's happening.
I found this note on the Microsoft Knowledge Base: "If you can ping a
NetBIOS name but cannot use the NET command, follow these steps:
1. If this occurs only across a router, check to see if TCP Port 139 is
enabled.
The NET commands and the Map Network Drive command in Windows rely on TCP
Port 139. To enable this port the administrator of the router should be
contacted. If further help is needed, contact the router manufacturer."
Could this be my problem? How do I verify that port 139 is open on my
Belkin router?

According to your observation, and to the CPSServ log (and PSService), the
server, sharedaccess, and workstation services are running on Mars. On Venus,
only the Workstation service appears to be running. If you're getting an error
on Venus, when trying to access Mars, I'd suspect LSP / Winsock / TCP/IP
corruption.

I ran the LSP and Winsock diagnostics, and it looks like things are normal on
both computers (see netdiag output below). I have not taken the step of
resetting TCP/IP; the Windows Guided Help tool recommends not doing this
unless you have internet connectivity problems, which I do not. Nor have I
done a repair installation of Windows, which seems like a last resort. (I
only have the SP1 CD, so reinstalling XP SP2 on both machines is a
mind-numbing, all-day affair.)
It's worth noting that the XP SP2 installations on both machines are
relatively recent. In the last 2 months I had to reformat the hard drives on
both computers due to viruses and other file corruptions. So the
installations are "fresh" and working perfectly in all other respects. I
will keep plugging away, but I'm afraid this has now taken more of my time
than it's worth...

Error message received on Venus when trying to access files on Mars:
"\\Mars is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.
The Server service is not started."
The following steps were taken on both computers in this order. After each
step, existence of the problem was rechecked.
DNS test: Pinged a website by its name and its IP address. The only
noticeable difference was the response time, which was longer for the IP
address (145ms versus 79ms when pinging by name).
LSP fix: Ran the LSP fix program from www.cexx.org on both machines. In
each case, the program reported "No problems found."
Winsock Fix: Ran the WinsockFix from www.tacktech.com.
Ran Winsock XP Fix from http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Windows native procedures: netsh winsock reset catalog
Registry rebuild (xp_winsock.reg from onecomputerguy) done
Reset TCP/IP using the MS Guided Help program. Rebooted the computer,
rechecked the problem. Same error message.
Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for my SMC Network Card Adapter.
Error still present.
In the Event Viewer, there is an Application warning that seems correlated
with my recurring error message:

I had the same problem after using Kaspersky Internet Security and it
expired on me before in uninstalled it. The only way I was able to fix
my problem is by restoring an image I hade made before instralling
Kaspersky Internet Security.
