- XP-2000 pro network problem
- Posted by Libelula on October 6th, 2005
Hello,
I just received a Thinkpad as a donation from a company that was getting rid
of them. It has 2000 Pro installed on it and I am trying to network it to my
desktop that has XP SP2. I got a wireless G router to setup my internet
connection, and bought a wireless card for the laptop. I went through and
set up the wireless network for the desktop, but when I tried to set up the
actual network, I made a network setup disk for the 2000 laptop, and the
following message was displayed: "The Newtork Setup Wizard is supported only
on Win 98, ME, and XP. Instructions for configuring a newtork for other
operating systems can be found in the help files in those systems."
So, I looked, but I couldn't find anything that explained what I needed to
do. Can sanyone help me on this one?
Thanks,
Rebecca

It isn't necessary to run the Wizard on any other computers, even
though the Wizard tells you to. You can make the network settings
manually. On the Thinkpad:
1. Go to Control Panel | Network and Dial-up Connections.
2. Right-click the LAN connection and click Properties.
3. Install these network components if they're not present: Client for
Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
4. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and configure it to obtain
an IP address and DNS server addresses automatically.
5. Right-click My Computer and click Properties | Network
Identification | Properties. Make the computer a member of a
workgroup, and set the workgroup name to the same name that the XP SP2
desktop uses.

Steve,
Thanks for your help. I did what you suggested, and I noticed a small
problem. Below the area where I change the computer name in 2000 pro, it
says that the full name is "MYNAME.spartan.com" I think that this is because
the company that donated the computer must have used that suffix in their
computer name. I can't figure out how to change that. On my XP computer, it
won't allow for a name that long, nor will it allow for periods"." After I
restarted the 2000 pro computer, an error message appeared saying that a
duplicate name already exists in the network. Is this a problem? After
configuring everything as you mentioned, I still can't seem to share file,
internet, and printer.
Thanks for your help.
