Did you ever have Spyblocker or Tweakmaster on this system? If so, pls say so; and I'd advise you not have them running when you go to Windows Update. They make changes to your Hosts file --- this is also where you need to state your Windows version.
You need to locate yours. See if it has any entries for microsoft.com or windowsupdate in that file. In addition, see if it has any entry for
akamai.net
Akamai.net is used for a small portion of download info for Windows Update.
The "normal" location of Hosts is at
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc (for Windows XP)
or on Win2000 at C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc
Or on Windows 98 at C:\Windows\Hosts
Use Notepad to view contents of *your* Hosts file.
Any lines that have # in the first column, do not count. # indicates a comment line & has no effect.
Hosts file is a text-type file & you can use Windows' Notepad to look at it; and edit, if necessary.
In your Internet Explorer browser> main menu /Tools/Internet Options >
Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Un-check "Require server verification (https
for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list
of "Trusted Sites" --
type
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com (and then click Add )
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (click Add)
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (yes with HTTPS)
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
*.akamai.net (yes, akamai.net -- )
Click OK.
