A Medal, my undying gratitude, and my full permission to
sack all those idiots at Microsoft to anyone who can tell
me how to uninstall the pile of unadulterated crap that
is 'update 832894'
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

(for win98): Control panel -- Add/Remove programs -- Internet Explorer
Q832894
PS: what is it causing to be suck a "crap" ? a snowstorm ??

I wasn't able to find the q832894 file on add/remove
programs control panel. Instead I did a system restore to
the day before I installed the update and it (sound
devices) work again! Hope this helps.

Wanda,
Hope you get to see this ... have you scanned your system for spyware ?
Download and install :
AdAware
http://lavasoftusa.com
On first running it, click the globe icon to get the latest definiton
files. Read the Help file to learn how to configure it to best scan your
system. If need be, AdAware will inform you that it could not remove
some files because they are in use and the system needs to be rebooted .
It will launch on reboot and finish the job. If it does not, advise you
to reboot and run the scan again.

Mike S, you are a star!
I just wish the 'good' people at Microsoft had listed that
simple fix somewhere in their notes for all us non-
JAVASCRIPT/COBOL/FORTRAN/BOLLIX geek heads out there.
It was crap because it disabled username/password
functionality in URLs for IE6.
Thanks again, your simple solution did the trick!

I think you're being a little unfair. From the Security Bulletin on
TechNet:
Removal Information
To remove this update, use the Add or Remove Programs tool (or the
Add/Remove Programs tool) in Control Panel.
Click Internet Explorer Q832894, and then click Change/Remove (or click
Add/Remove).
The Help and Support Centre is also pretty useful. If you search on
"uninstall" the first item under Suggested Topics is "Change or remove a
program" and gives good clear instructions.
You might find http://support.microsoft.com/?id=834489 useful, also,
regarding the password issue.

Kari,
You should be fair too.. As he said, he's not a computer geek, and the info
is not so easy to find when you don't know already where to find it.
You must agree that the change he is complaining about is *not* advertised
on the windows update summary and you will also agree that it is not every
user who will read the security updates bulletin referred to by the "more
info" link.
Even then, the technet's page that opens is full of techno-babble and links
to other pages, Not a single mention of what this update does is made
there.
One must click on the "Apply Critical Security Patch for Internet Explorer
Now (feb 2, 2004)" link to get additional info. [note: why this date ?
wasn't the patch issued jan 30 ?? has it to be more confusing ?? ]
Once done, he/she will arrive at a page titled "Microsoft Security Bulletin
Search" where the page's top is almost identical to the previous page.. Not
very helpful.. By scrolling down, he/she will find a link to the bulletin
MS04-004 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894) [At last
!].
But that's not all.. Clicking on that link finally opens the said bulletin,
he/she must expand and read the different sections to find what their
content is. The The "Frequently Asked Questions" section itself is 10 feet
long !
He/She will finally find in the "Technical Details" section the changed
functionnalities details and after that look in the "Security Update
Information" section to find IF and HOW it can be unisatalled. (note: this
is where YOU started your post !!!)
It's easy to say when one's knows where the information is / how the site is
structured as you do or as many (but far from all !) technical support
people do.
But I would bet that a large majority of the average user would abandon the
search well before reaching its targeted info. Most of them would not even
think of coming here to ask the question.
A "quick facts" link directly accessible on the Windows Update site,
summarizing the update contents and impacts would not be a luxury. Don't
you agree ?
Regards,
Mike

If I have the right tilt on this problem, you can keep the update but remove
the URL password problem by doing the following:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
Find the following keys in the Registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME _PASSWOR
D_DISABLE]
The create or modify the following
"explorer.exe"=dword:00000000
"iexplore.exe"=dword:00000000
Make sure that you export any existing keys that you change before making
this change, or at least ensure you can roll back either by a Restore point
or a SCANREG/RESTORE.
Hope this helps,
Martin

Martin, I did see this, but not being a computer whizz I
lost it after I saw Windows Registry Editor v5. What's
that then??
You have to assume I'm a moron when it comes to computers
I'm afraid!!!

Mike,
Well said, I couldn't have put it better (I wouldn't have
known how to...).
Kara,
I DID see the support page but it was going on about
editing registries and that is something I have NO
experience in, I simply use computers I don't go around
editing the settings, especially in the registry. The
instructions 'go to the registry and create an
iexplore.exe with a value of 0' may as well be written in
Swahili unless you actually maintain computers or have a
job in IT. I don't.
I couldn't find the page with uninstall instructions and I
spent an hour trawling the Microsoft site. FAQ pages,
search pages, you name it.
Its NOT very user-friendly.
Now I am getting the auto update message again and even if
I go to the page and Remove Q832894, I get prompted to
upload it again every 24 hours. Infuriating isn't the word.

Dave,
I will give it a try, but it would help a bit if I knew which operating
system you are using so that I can guide you in the best way to protect your
registry in case you mess it up.
So, which OS do you have Win98, ME, XP, 2000?

Hi. Just save this message to your hard drive and then edit it as
shown below. Save the resulting file with a .reg extension (e.g.
fix-ie.reg) and then double click on the file...

"explorer.exe"=dword:00000000

For some reason this posting seems to wrap the lines improperly -- the
entire text within brackets should be on one line.

I apologize for the intrusion, but I've been looking all day for the
resolution to this issue.
To make a long story short, we have a page. Once you put your cursor
in the first text box on the page to put in some information, you get
about 10 seconds to hit 'submit' or the form discards everything. We
have about 20,000 consistent users.
I tried adding the registry keys, to no avail. Still get the same
behavior. If I uninstall the patch, it works fine. Any ideas besides
uninstalling the patch?

We are experiencing the exact same problem with forms that use Java. You
fill out the entire form and then click Submit, you get returned to the same
page you just filled out with all of the form fields cleared.
