- Can I force Windows Update downloads to use a specific hard drive?
- Posted by Alex on November 16th, 2003
The Windows Update process creates WUTemp on the root of the drive
with the most available disk spece. Unfortunately in my case, my
largest partition is actually locked by a Data Replication
application. Is there a way to tell Windows to use another partition
instead?
My Windows Updates FAIL because the partiton with the largest amount
of free space is locked. In order to run Windows Updates I must
currently stop my Data Replication application, then reboot my system
to free up the locked permission that was applied to my largest
partition, then run the Windows update. Very inconvenient!
Although I have plently of available free space on a number of other
partitions the Windows Uppdate process always FAILS because it tries
to use my largest partiton. How can I force it toalways use Drive D:,
or tell it to NEVER use Drive E:?

I've asked your same question in this group and elsewhere. The consensus
seems to be that there's no way to force Windows Update to use a particular
partition for its temp files. Marking the larger (in terms of free space)
partition as hidden, or removing its drive letter via Disk Management are
the only methods I've found that'll stop WU from using it.
If there's a better solution I've yet to find it.

Hi Alex,
This is by design and unfortunately there's no workaround.
Thanks,
