I have been trying for days to get 2 updates to install. One is a
"security" update (819696) and the other is a "recommended" update (DirectX
9.0b End-User Runtime). Whenever I try to get these updates, both say they
have been successfully downloaded and installed, yet if I go back to the
update page, it says I still need to do these 2 updates.

If I look on the Add/Remove Programs menu, 819696 does not show up. In
DXDIAG, it says I still have DirectX 8.1 in the system info.

I have tried everything I know of: disabling anti-virus protection and
popup stopper, getting the updates individually through the MS Knowledge
Base, etc. So far, nothing seems to work!

HELP!

I'm the only one logged on, and I am the Administrator. So no help there.

Following some other advice, it does now seem as though 819696 did indeed
get installed (although it keeps showing up on Windows Update). However, I
still can not get DirectX 9.0b to install properly.

Try downloading directly from the following site and installing manually:
