If the problem is with an update from the windows update site I have used
the following site to contact Microsoft and have recieved support from them.
You may want to try it. Keep me posted of what you find as I have held off
downloading this update so far. I have IE6.0 but not SP1.

I have exactly the same problem. I solved it by uninstalling the hotfix
components until it worked again, about 5 of them or so. It's especially
nice that the machine has to reboot each time too.
It also broke my Symantek auto updater, which the above fixed.
