- Don't install Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894)!!!!!!
- Posted by Bo Kvist on February 5th, 2004
For heaven's sake Microsoft! Remove it immediately from
your site.
The potential threats from the bugs before an update with
this package is NOTHING compared to the guaranteed disaste
caused by the fix!
It destroys:
Printing over TCP/IP = LPR-printing restarts in the
spooler several times (error - restart - prints - error
etc) and eventually you crap out of the printer
The TCP/IP-communication is unstable
You can't see your workgroup from time to time
Workgroup's name that was OK before the fix aren't
accepted anymore (name with a space in it)
You can't get contact with any URLs through IE after a
while
It seem as there is a memory leak or that this bugfix
tries to write to non-existent or protected memory
(Unallowed access to memory position .....)
To all that haven't found out how to uninstall it:
Add/remove programs - you will find the uninstall
script "Internet Explorer KB832894"
(It isn't among the Windows fixes)
I'm not sure if you can completely back out of this
disaster, when I tried to find out what was wrong with my
printer definitions I reinstalled them and the network
cards. I fear that bugfixbug may have destroyed the system
totally.

Bo;
I don't have any problems from it.
Did you disable your Anti Virus software
before installing?
How to update Windows XP
-----------------------
logoff and logon before updating.
close all applications before updating.
leave xp firewall on.
disable antivirus software...reboot will re-enable.
download/install the update.
reboot after updating....probably automatic anyway.

Wow. That's quite interesting how so many of those
problems appeared on your machine all at once by a
Internet Explorer 6 patch.
I can't say I have experienced anything wrong with this
patch. If anything, my system runs flawlessly.
But, then again, diferent people have diferent Xp setups.

Mixed LAN.
2 W2Kpro and 2 XPhome.
First updated one W2Kpro then the other one.
After one day updated the XPHomes.
W2Kpros with Panda Antivirus
One XPhome with Norton Antivirus
The other without virusprotection at all.
No firewall active in XPs, have separate unit for that.
Different workgroup trouble between all machines, didn't
see other units in the workgroup - couldn't connect - one
XP "stated can't open workgroup file, my system might be
outdated"
No, I didn't shut down the antivirus program as I don't
want to install something that isn't virus-checked.
Would be nice with an option in Windows Update:
- download selection from recommended fixes to a temporary
storage
- perform a separate virus check of the files
- continue with installing
instead of downloading and installing in one step.

Unfortunately not.
The system seems to be destroyed.
It run flawlessly, with the fix, for about one day until I
tried to make a printout from the browser. That printout
never left the spooler and nothing else could be printed
from that system.
Printouts from other programs on the other machines were
OK when tested. Nobody tried printout from IE on them.

Thanks Bo. Ijust backed out of the update and my Media
Player 7.1 now can stream Video. ( I'm running W98). I
have spent 4 hours re-installing 7.1 because MP 9 is not
supported on W98 and Micosoft wants me to upgrade to XP. I
agree that this upgrade should be pulled from the site
until it can support us poor W98 users!!!!!

The patch killed email on one of my PC's. Outlook Express
now receives messages, but as soon as you click on another
folder, or close and reopen OE, the mail disappears. I
finally out of desperation tried removing Outlook Express,
thinking I would reinstall, but couldn't because of a
message stating that I already had a newer version of IE.
I'll try removing the patch and see if that helps. I
spent 5 hours working on one machine yesterday trying to
make OE work following the latest Microsoft patches for XP.

My problems with LPR-printout seem to be caused by the
combination of OS, specific machine and/or a antivirus
program.
I was mislead in tracing the problem by the fact that the
antivirus program didn't cause any trouble on another
laptop with pretty identical setup.
Therefore I installed the same upgraded antivirus program
on laptop no 2, added IE-fix 832894. When I then tried to
make a printout from IE and got problems I didn't suspect
the antivirus program as it didn't show a strange
behaviour on laptop no 1. The IE-fix wasn't installed on
laptop no 1 either.
Will delete WINNT-directory completely on one partition on
laptop no 2 and start from scratch to be able to confirm
that the combination of machine and AV destroys LPR-
printing (but WHY should that program fiddle around with
the communication layers?)

Bo;
Troubleshooting can sometimes lead one
down the wrong alley. Especially if one has
preconceived notions.
)
Nah, it couldn't be that.
