download complete: installing components (Hangs)
Posted by hudnut on September 11th, 2003

I just installed a new MOBO, processor, and ram RAM. I
reinstalled a fresh copy windows XP pro (no format) and
no windows update hangs after the updates are
downloaded. I've tried all of the fixes I could find and
nothing seems to work. The first time I used W.U. after
the installation of XP it downloaded the 37M of updates
in about 7 min (756kbps cable) I cancled after the
instalation hung and windows update had to be closed by
ctrl-alt-del. Now when I try and use W.U. again the
download only takes a few seconds and then when complete
and the updates are installing it hangs. Please, Please
help me.

Your "download" is really quick the subsequent times becase a temp file is
stored on your local drive the first time. If there is a problem with this
file you might want to delete it and try the download again. Look for the
WUtemp folder and have a look at folders inside this. If the file is large
and you have a slow modem, then I suggest you first consider if the problem
is caused by something else before trying to do the download again. Check
out the error messages in Windows Update log, and other log files that
you'll see mentioned in other posts here...
