- Driver Update

I've seen the previous recommendations that driver updates be downloaded
from the manufacturer, rather than MS and then, only if a problem is being
corrected.
However, today Windows Update tells me to update my NVidia Video driver, and
the notice appears in the Critical Updates section, rather than the driver
updates.
Furthermore, the MS file is 12.2 MB, while the NVidia website shows the same
file as 8.58 MB
Any suggestions?

Never Mind - I just scrolled further down the group to discover that this
NVidia 52.16 driver is well plowed ground. The conclusion is that MS has no
damned business posting third party drivers, and that anyone foolish enough
to install them has only himself to blame for the resulting disaster.

You have it partially wrong.
The 3rd party drivers on Windows Update are submitted by the
manufacturer.
Microsoft then checks the drivers and posts them.
IIRC, the manufacturers pay Microsoft for this.
Microsoft only does it if the manufacturer wants it.
However it is usually best to get drivers directly from the
manufacturer.

Microsoft to help fix crashes on this specific hardware.
If you have problems with the update please let us know.

Just curious - why is the Windows Update version of NVidia 52.16 about 12MB,
while
the version on the NVidia website is about 9 MB?

When the driver is sent to WU we run a high compression on it to save
bandwidth.

Surely in that case, the MS WU version should be *smaller* then the Nvidia
version, not the other way around.
