eBay says NO TO LINUX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Peter Colon Man on February 11th, 2004

This should come as no surprise to anyone.
The number of Linux users is so miniscule compared to Windows and
MacIntosh users that it is simply not worth eBay's time to redesign
their entire system just to accomodate the .2 percent of the market
that are Linux users.

....all 150 of them too!

(excuse me... I can't hold it back) BWAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

This is hysterical stuff.

Another WIN for Linux *****NOT********

Well designed sites aim for the 'lowest common demoninator' of
technologies as far as is reasonably possible, this has enormous
commercial advantages.

Microsoft is not going to be 'top dog' fo ever, just look at IBM which
was in a similar position in the 1970's.

Guess what? I went to a services outsource company to have a website
designed. I asked to check out their portfolio, and I saw most of
their websites didn't display correctly on Linux (Mozilla, Opera,
Konqueror). I told the guy, how is it possible to have web sites only
compatible with IE ?! He said I shouldn't worry, because 1st, about
95% users run IE, then, the 5% are "hackers" that won't buy from you.
Well, I told him that I buy books on Amazon every month, and I don't
always use Internet Explorer. To date, the websites made by this
company are still "best viewed with Internet Explorer".
What can we do?

So all Mac users running Safari are hackers, according to this guy? I
wouldn't do business with him not because he refuses to design for other
browsers, but because he sounds like a total idiot.

As I've said earlier, hitching your fate to one wagon is dangerous because
you never know when that wagon's going to go off a cliff.

It seems to me that web designers are getting lazy & stagnant. a lot of
sites are forcing IE on visitors. i guess, it's a result of the end of the
browser wars. who knows?

i remember a few years ago, when you had to make sure your site dispayed
properly for all visitors regardless of hardware or OS or browser. cross
compatability was much more important trhan today.

I'm a web designer and I design my sites around IE for two reasons.
1. Most people use it.
2. It's the best.

What is ebay going to do when Microsoft opens it's auction site and directs
the consumers to MS-Auction? (or is ebay owned by microsoft by now?)

Mozilla (on a PC, mac AND linux) is a darn good browser, it strives for
standards compliance, targeting it is != targeting linux users.

There was a time when I thought microsoft would "re-invent" the internet in
such a way that only windows users could use it, I know they're trying to..
but, now I almost hope they do come up with their own actual network.

It'd be a big win for microsoft and their users:

..) They could design their protocol to display ads^H^H^Hinformation
featuring the latest and greatest software with options to purchase.

..) The blue butterfly could intercept information that might be offensive
before it even gets to the users computer.

..) You could just "subscribe" to Microsoft and have everything updated
automatically, you'd never need to use any of that "icky software"
produced by other vendors.

..) There would be absolutely no "viruses" because the Windows would not permit
installation of software that did not have the Microsoft seal of approval.
(this approval would, of course, be microsofts own version of a PGP key
of some kind, you know, to keep out the hackers.)

..) Since it's Microsofts own network, you wouldn't have to use DNS or any
of those awful open-standards based solutions.

..) Anyone with a license key would be in MS-Heaven?

Think about it.

There is a Website or two that advocates browser friendliness for everyone.
ALL of my websites are browser friendly. I don't understand why they can't
too. A word comes to mind though... LAZY I guess they don't realize some
of the best Techs use Linux. They make the money too. We will see how well
their Internet Explorer BS does in a few years. That will be the day when
Linux browsers will be laughing their butts off watching all these none
friendly websites update because they target one browser only. There's a
word for those that target one browser too. STUPID Places like ebay will
be hurting then.
