01. Start / Run / regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u / OK to un-register the library.

02. Use Start / Search to search for Files and Folders. Type iuengine.dll,
iuctl.dll into the file search box.

03. Delete all occurrences of these two files, deleting the ones in
%SystemRoot%\System32 last.

04. Re-visit Windows Update.

I had same problem. Tried "big dave's" solution but don't think search found
all files (did tell it to check hidden files/folders). Didn't find any
"%SystemRoot%\System32 ". Only succeeded in getting into the download new
windows update software loop & going dizzy. (Trouble is that I can follow
exact instructions, but those that need a modicum of nonce re. filling in
the gaps, leaves me scrathing my head).
Ended up going to a restore point a couple of days ago & update seems to
work OK now (tells me there's 4 windows & 1 driver update which I knew about
anyway).
However, regardless of my lack of success, I hope his solution works for
anyone else, & Thanx anyway for sharing the knowledge.
Nev

Dave -
I have followed your advice and tried your method twice
with no success. I have also tried the items listed on the
MS support page but none of the items were wrong in my
system. Win2000 Pro is my OS and this problem is only
affecting 1 machine (laptop) out of my entire 6 machines.
Any other ideas?
