error 0x800c0005 on Win XP
Posted by skiman on January 29th, 2004

I am a new user of a Brand New Sony System using windows XP. When I try to Update Windows a receive a error message 0x800c0005. I have tried for 2 weeks to fix this without any luck. On another newgroup a Tim Newton[MSFT] stated I should check for a firewall (looked on the Control Panel and did not find one), (checked Norton Antivirus to see if personal firewall was engaged and is not), Checked Internet Explorer for Auto Detect setting under LAN setting on connection tab and no boxes are checked. I have gone to C:\windows\windows update.log and found the error message shows IU ENGINE Querying software update catalog from https://v4.windowsupdate.miscrosoft.com/getmanifest.asp (error 0x800c0005). Ok so now what can I do. I am a beginner level computer user and can seem to fight my way out of this wet paper bag. Help please??????

Add the following Trusted Sites:

5. Click "Sites."
6. Clear the check box "Require server verification (httpsfor all sites in
this zone."
7. Add the following sites.
http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com

Can you access SSL enabled sites?
Try the following test site:
https://www.stanford.edu/group/idg/l...cure/test.html

What happens if you access the following:
https://v4.windowsupdate.miscrosoft.com/getmanifest.asp

This can also happened if an installed program is intercepting the Windows
Update process.
Here's a knowledge base article with a list of some known programs:

For testing purposes you may try temporarily disabling any web
enhancement/accelerator/Antivirus programs before accessing the site.

Please let me know the results for the steps suggested.
Were you able to access the SSL test site?

A couple more possibilities:

Try reinstalling Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;318378

Next:

Selective Startup:
1. Click Start and Click Run, and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks) and click OK.
2. Under the Service tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then
uncheck all the services listed.
3. Under the General tab, put a check next to "Selective Startup" and
uncheck Load Startup Items and click OK.
4. Choose Yes to restart the computer.

Access Windows Update.
