try this
go to control panels/folder options/view tab and make sure that 'Hide
extensions for known file types' is not ticked
then restart computer in safe mode (F8 during boot up)
then go here C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
look for a file called hosts (NO extension) there might be others that do
have an extension, just leave them
rename the file to something like hostsold
then restart computer and try windows update again
if it works then there is an address in the hosts file thats causing it
(possibly containing the akamai site)
