Failed Windows Updates
Posted by Chad on July 18th, 2003

My computer was shut down during an install of the
windows update so now my history of updates say "Failed"
for those items.

I would try to download them again, but they are no
longer available to me in the left column. Is there a
way to re-download updates that have failed?

Thanks!

My problem is much the same, so many failed updates that I
need to completely restart the history as I have had to
reinstall ME

Hi,
You might try this.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Select Internet Options from the Tools drop down menu.
3. On the General tab click Delete Cookies.
4. Click OK to the confirmation message which is
displayed.
5. Click Delete Files.
6. Tick Delete all offline content and click OK.
7. Click Clear History
8. At the message Are you sure you want windows to delete
your history of visited websites, click Yes.
9. Click OK on the Internet Options screen and close
Internet Explorer
10. Click Start and select Run.
11. Type explorer c:\program files and click OK.
12. Select Folder Options from the Tools drop down menu.
13. Go to the tab View.
14. Select the option Show hidden files and folders in
the Advanced Settings box.
15. Click OK.
16. Right click the folder WindowsUpdate and select
Rename.
17. Press the Backspace key to remove the current file
name and type oldwindowsupdate and press ENTER.
18. Go to the File drop down menu and highlight New,
select the option Folder.
19. Type the name WindowsUpdate and press ENTER.
20. Double click the new folder created in the step above.
21. Go to the File drop down menu and highlight New,
select the option Folder.
22. Type the name V4 and press ENTER.
23. Click the back arrow at the top of the screen. This
should now display the Program Files folder.
24. Double click the folder oldwindowsupdate and then
double click the folder V4.
25. Right click the file iuhist.xml and click copy.
26. Click the Back button at the top of the screen twice.
This should now display the Program Files folder.
27. Double click the folder WindowsUpdate and then double
click the folder V4.
28. Go to the Edit drop down menu and select Paste.
29. Close Windows Explorer and test Windows Update. Does
the same problem occur?

If the same problem occurs it may be useful to use the
Windows Update Troubleshoot. I find the Update to be a
colossal pain in the neck.

If you hear of another way, please let me know.

Bye.
