Follow the money, Micros~1->SCO

"Excuse me, did we say in Halloween IX that Microsoft's under-the-table
payoff to SCO for attacking Linux was just eleven million dollars? Turns
out we were off by an order of magnitude -- it was much, much more
than that."

GNU/Linux revenues last quarter: $1 Billion.
Apple revenues last quarter: $2 Billion.
micros~1 revenues last quarter: $4 Billion.
It's no longer a question of windows or GNU, it's a question of *Unix* or GNU.

AS has been stated elsewhere, ESR can be a bit of a extremist, and until
which time a second party confirms it, you shouldnt evanglize it as truth.

Just like the halloween documents in the first place, we can expect a
flurry of denials and then [possibly] a confirmation.

I believe ESR would have taken some basic steps before publishing, such
as checking headers and IP's, veryifying that the person was in a
position to get the email in the first place, and that its not just a
plant to try and let SCO actually have a claim of 'falsehoods' being spread.

That being said, I cross my fingers, and hope it is real.

Then perhaps the paper shackles of the DoJ settlement will come off, and
some real punishment begin.

Fearing a spontaneous XP reboot, Philip Callan mumbled this incantation:

What makes you think ESR didn't do the basic research?

I forwarded the link to PJ ("owner" of the GrokLaw blog).

Here's another quote from the story:

"I realize the last negotiations are not as much fun, but Microsoft will
have brough in $86 million for us including Baystar. The next deal we
should be able to get from $16-20, but it will be brutial as it is for go to
makerket work and some licences."

If this is true (and we do know that Melinda Gates is involved in BayStar),
it will make Martha Stewart's troubles look like a cakewalk.

By the way, try to send this link to the IT press sites and to the SEC
when you get a chance. This sounds like gross interference in the free market.

Actually, as much as I dislike ESR, it is his "extreamism" that would seem
to make his assertions more credible. Someone stating main-stream
"conventional wisdom" need do only the minimalist (if any) research. An
extreamist who routinely states things that are against mainstream must do
a better job because they are more likely to be challenged. Once
discredited, the extreamist has difficulty being taken seriously.

Many people call ESR an extreamist, but I don't recall anyone disputing him.
To publically call someone a liar, (by default) as you did, because his
opinions are merely different than yours, is the worst kind of FUD.

Do you know that he didn't? What evidence do you have that he didn't? What
makes you think that he didn't?

This, I doubt.

Novell's, AutoZone's, and Daimler-Chryler's lawyers can subpoena the
original.

Uhh, no I dont, none, and nothing.

Please re-read my statement where I say 'I BELIEVE ESR *WOULD*' have
taken some steps, and later 'until which time a second party confirms
it, you shouldnt evanglize it as truth'

Which is what is the sane thing to do, otherwise we trumpet each press
release as gospel, and we are no better than SCO in that regard.

Ok, doubt it, your acceptance of my beliefs is not necessary for this
debate.

Nothing, thats why I said 'I believe ESR would have taken some basic

I believe he *did* do said research and verify, but just as the first
halloween documents show, there is going to be denials and evasion, so
to come on and post the link, *without* putting the disclaimer that even
ESR says:

I cannot certify its authenticity, but I presume that IBM's, Red Hat's,
Novell's, AutoZone's, and Daimler-Chryler's lawyers can subpoena the
original.

Point is, until I see a copy in a court record, I'm not suggesting
anyone go around posting the url, without indicating this is still early
in the game, and its not been verified by a 2nd party yet.

There you have it. A hundred million funnelled from Microsoft to SCO, of

Microsoft, kite your stock, and pray you stay out of jail.

Neither of these are good proof that mlw is an idiot, but they're a
