I tried to download the 5 critical updates and service
packs that windows update found I needed, but it just
showed a dialog box...saying, "Preparing to download..."
I don't know why it is taking a long time to update...can
anyone help?

This can if the dispex.dll file is not registered.

Register the file.

Click Start > Run
Type "regsvr32 dispex.dll" (w/o quotes)
Press OK

Try Windows Update again.
