- How does Windows Update work?
- Posted by Ola Presterud on March 4th, 2004
Is there any technical description on how the Windows Update engine works,
how the process of downloading the packages and installation of them is
done?
We have a system filtering away unwanted changes, and the Windows Update
downloades should be kept...

A quick overview is available on the update site:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Under "See Also"
select "About Windows Update"
Hope this helps.

@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl:
Thanks, but this is not technical enough for me :-)
When using FileMon and Procexp from SysInternals, it seems like Internet
Explorer is the application doing the update, and then directly executing
the dowloaded packages for installation. But what is happening inside IE?
Also, wupdmgr.exe seems to start IE as a service doing the Update. Why? And
does it do anything else? Because it seems like the update is done in the
exactly same way if you manually type in the adress for the update site,
and IEXPLORE runs as a normal application.
