Is IE 5.5 with patches as good as IE 6 SP1
Posted by Martin on February 24th, 2004

Someone posted the following in the Win98 newsgroup. Please excuse the cross
posting to the IE6 newsgroup, but I have not had any real responses there
yet.

Quote:

1st poster:
"you should probably upgrade IE to version 6 SP1. There are a lot of
security fixes in 6 that you need to have."

2nd poster:
"Wrong. IE5.5 SP2, when updated with security patches, is as secure *as any
browser MS has released*. Many find it more stable for Win98 than IE6. The
simple fact is that you are no more likey to be hacked with 5.5 than
6.whatever."

Is this statement true - or total %$&%$£&^

I personally have IE6, but was interested in what everyone thought.

TIA

Martin

Hi

If you install the latest cumulative update (MS04-004/KB832894) on
both IE 5.5 and IE 6, I would think that basically they would be the
same security wise.

But one major difference is that (at least that is what is stated)
KB832894 is the last update that will be made available to IE 5.5
(unless you run Windows ME).

So when the next cumulative update is released, IE 5.5 will be more
unsecure than IE 6 (unless you run Windows ME).
