- Install downloads from Update Catalog
- Posted by on August 9th, 2003
I looked around the boards and did searches, but these
words are just too common to do an effective search.
After waiting about 2 hours for installation to finish on
the automatic update for Root Certificates, I decided it
had failed and downloaded the update from the Windows
Update Catalog. Now how do I install it? I clicked on
the .exe file, but don't know if that worked or not. I
also clicked on Start, Run, rootsupd.exe but can't tell if
it worked. I also have the same file in my Windows Update
Temp file. (The Windows Update site indicates the
installation failed, but no longer lists it as a needed
update.)

What operating system?
Go to windows Update.
Click "View Installation history"
Is it listed as Successful?
If not, reboot and try installing it again.

Thanks, JJ, for the swift response.
I'm using Win98SE. As I mentioned in my above post, the
Windows Update site indicates the installation failed, but
no longer lists it as a needed update. It is no longer
offered to me when I check for updates.
I downloaded it from the Catalog, but I need to know how
it installs. Does the rootsupd.exe file self-install, so
that I merely click on it? I'd like to know for future
reference, too.
When I clicked on the file, there was no screen action,
but my sound effects did reflect files opening and
closing. I think the update is installed, but how can I
verify it?

The only way I know to verify is to "View Installation History"
What does C:\Windows\Windows Update.log show?
Double clicking the .exe should install it.
Disable antivirus and any other unnecessary applications.

Ok JJ,
I looked at the log and it showed PAGES of "starting
up", "shutting down" related to my failed attempt. Since
that, all entries look normal. Installation History shows
I am up-to-date, so I'm happy with that. From now on,
when alerted to an available update, I may consider using
the catalog rather than the auto-updater, since it allows
me more control.
Thanks for the info and your attention.
