- It's official Linux is installed!

I just got Linux Mandrake 9.1 installed. It was a piece of cake! No
problems, no headaches, I didn't even break a sweat. LOL What is all the
fuss about? I don't have a modem for it right now. I would like to
get a serial modem. Can any one name one to get?

Nice for you :-)
Mandrake usually is. Some unfortunate owners of LG drives might
disagree, but what the hell ...
If you want that, you should try installing Gentoo on exotic and
sporadically faulty hardware. *There's* a worthy challenge!
*shrugs* Ask the trolls ... They always have trouble ...
I *was* going to ask why you didn't post with Linux, but I guess you
answered that. Is this the same box you have Windows on? There *are*
drivers for some WinModems, you know.
Any external hardware modem will do fine. In my experience there's
little difference in quality, once you avoid the shoddy WinModems. You
also don't get disconnects if there's a sudden surge in CPU usage (well,
at least that's what can happen in Windows).
But why not treat yourself to some broadband? After all, you'll soon be
saving lots of money with cheaper software :-)

No thanks! I will pass. I will take this slow, and enjoy the experience.

I have a Lucent WinModem I would lots rather not mess with it unless The
have a good driver for it. But I thought just getting a hardware modem
would be best. No not the same machine. I have two pcs So I took Windows
ME off the other one and installed Linux. I think my computer is happy now
too.

I think Madrake Box sets do.

hi
best 56k modem you can get is 3com / usr external courier 3453 v92 model
look on a ebay going for ~ $40 - $80
new from 3com is over $200
this modem will get 3-5k faster transfer than your low cost models
specially on old telco lines

Get any external modem that connects to the serial port. They are easier
to configure and work like a charm. I use the US Robotics ones with
excellent success.

Don't use modems. There's really no way to enjoy the internet anymore
without at least a 2mb network connection. Sad, but luckily the
service has come down in price. You can get DSL so cheaply now that
it's not even worth doing dialup anymore.

that's no 2 meg though -- 768K at best...
and don't count on cable either -- 1.5M *possible*
( i.e. when people aren't watching a lot of tv
and doing downloads )
still -- i will stick with my Earthlink DSL
modems, i agree, are dead...
with 3G wireless creeping into the US
and the Centrino chip -- I doubt if we'll
be 'wired' much longer...
