i have tried several times to download these items - i get
a message saying download is complete but it still doesn't
work - help

If this is an error that you are getting form the Windows Update site then
can you do the following please:

Go to c:\windows\windows update.log scroll down to the bottom and look for
any errors. If you find them, please post them here.
