I downloaded yesterday's Windows Updates and then all
went amuck! Couldn't access Internet, horrible scratching
noise on start-up, other assorted messages. After hours
on the phone to India, had to re-install operating
system, etc.

This AM all was okay until update alert popped up again
and I downloaded; again lost access to Internet. This
time was able to restore to point before yesterday's two
updates.

I worry about not having latest security patches. Should
I be? Or are they sometimes more trouble than they're
worth?

Which update is conflicting with your configuration? I recommend
contacting Support for help getting the updates installed.
