I smell a rat, of the Microsoft variety.

I see two possible objectives that would motivate Microshaft
to engineer such a thing:

"Access to the source code could allow hackers to exploit the
operating system and attack machines running some versions of
Windows."

Translation: Future exploits can be blamed on "malicious hackers"
due, in big part, to the leaked code. Perhaps they foresaw the coming
storm of exploits and that was a desperate, yet calculated, attempt
to pass on the buck.

"The leaked code includes 30,915 files and was apparently removed
from a Linux computer used by Mainsoft for development purposes."

Translation: A Linux system that housed the code was compromised.
Linux security was flawed and did not do its job to protect confidential
information.

Keep your eyes and ears open over the coming weeks.

"leaked" code, they can try to claim it as a violation of MS' IP.

DON'T LOOK AT THE CODE!

Given Microsoft's past conduct, that is entirely possible.

But what I really want to know, Kaiser Bun, is why is your "User-Agent"
header very often identical to whomever you're replying to?

It isn't just the "User-Agent" header. He also adds something called
"NNTP-Posting-Hosts" (note the plural -- it's a made-up header) and matches
this to the real "NNTP-Posting-Host" header of the guy he's replying to.
There are probably other oddities about his headers, but this one happened
to jump out after I read your question and looked for myself.

I think he's doing it in order to screw with attempts to killfile him. If
someone plonks him based on a blind grep of all headers looking for a
string that he matched with YOUR header, then you and he both will be
plonked.

If there's another, less malicious and cowardly explanation, he's welcome to
chime in.

On 2004-02-14, Buford <email-me@your.leisure> blubbered:
The words "cowardly" and "malicious" and "KKK-KKKid" are
interchangeable for all intents and purposes. S/H/It hates not getting
attention. Since s/h/it can't overcome the strengths of good filtering,
s/h/it will "get even" by trying to take others out at the same time.

A bit of care can overcome the tricks. Mistakes can be made, sure. But
they're just as easily rectified once discovered.

DISCLAIMER: This post is directed and in response to Buford. I take no
responsibility for the narcissism that others may have that might cause
them to think all replies are directed to them and them alone. Anyone
believing that this response is really to them instead of Buford should
consider seeking psychological counselling, growing up and/or necking

Buford, the amazing Usenet wizard, left us all in awe with:
Pay attention, you brainless twit. My alias and email don't change.
Killfile me on that if you're so concerned. Easy enough, eh?

I didn't think you'd want to explain yourself. Another explanation has
occurred to me, though. Mimicking headers is handy when you're trying to
impersonate another user, isn't it? If you can make as many phony headers
as possible look like someone else's, then a casual inspection could easily
miss something like this:

(a real header in Tony Sivori's articles)
NNTP-Posting-Host: host-209-214-169-213.sdf.bellsouth.net (209.214.169.213)

(one of Kaiser Bun's phony headers in replies to Tony Sivori)
NNTP-Posting-Hosts: host-209-214-169-213.sdf.bellsouth.net (209.214.169.213)

There must be an innocent explanation for all this. I haven't thought of
one, yet, but Kaiser is such a mature, level-headed participant here that
it can't be anything underhanded or malicious.

Huh, and I had thought he was one one of the good guys. I was curious and
mildly amused at the User-Agent thing, because I hadn't noticed the other
headers. He's abusing open proxies, and simultaneously forging IP
addresses. What a luser.

A KKKlone, then.

S/H/It's using something that isn't getting through the filtering here.
There are only a handful using things that aren't getting past the
filters, and any one of them can be substituted for any of the others.

Playing with headers is just one of the tricks employed by them in an
attempt to be annoying. Solid filtering and outright ignoring deprive
them of their sustenance: attention.

I was browsing the articles in the shop when, as if by magic, Sinister Midget
suddenly appeared, at Sat, 14 Feb 2004 21:34:37 -0600 and said the following:
There is no reason to suspect that it is not K-man herself, as she
is at least two of the regulars on aow-xp, using different styles.

Another suspect in my book is Flatfish+++, who in my opinion
made at least one trolling attempt during the last week.
