To be fair about it, will your mandrake CD cough when the 300gb drives come
out?
I know I had a bit of a struggle getting OS/2 warp3.0 to install on
anything bigger than 8gb using the install disks by itself, but it happily
coexists now on a huge drive.
if xp was created before the 160gb drives existed, I could understand the
same problem, but am a bit surprised that no preplanning was made for
"future" drives of larger size.
Atleast with OS/2 they did prepare for the event even though drives of that
time were around the 250mb mark, and 8gb was considered "future".
So how does Mandrake 10 compare to previous versions? 9,8,7? :-)

that's the score... one - nil
at least on my machine...
mandrake linux 10 automatically detected my maxtor 160gb and installed
within minutes (amd 64, 1gb fastest ram, 256mb nvidia... basically the
latest and hottest hardware, yet, not a single hiccup from
mandrake)... what's even more.. it automatically detected my 21'
monitor and chose a 1600 x 1200 resolution... i think that's flawless
windows xp on the other hand, coughed right from the start, and
couldn't detect the maxtor hard drive... so i had to search for
drivers from the manufacturer so that windows xp would kindly
install...
Oh the irony, just how times change

I'll add that mandrake also automatically detected the 256mb nvidia
whereas windows didn't, and required driver installation....
mandrake 10 looks cool... i can't say much else i haven't used it yet

Well, guess we got to find you an excuse to use it more often ;-)
What I mention below, you may already be familiar with it, but if not,
hopefully it brings out ideas.... if not for you, then possibly for those
that read this post who've never used linux, & never answered anything on
cola....
Possibly setup Knode or Knews for comp.os.linux.advocacy
Kmail & Kaddressbook for your mail. Then there's the dialer such as kppp.
Under Mandrake 8 (which I'm still running), the mandrake control panel
(looks like picture of a pc card over a screen), you can setup the tiny
firewall, screensaver, desktop configs.
....basically, the more things you're using via mandrake, the more likely
you will be trying out other stuff within it too.
After all, pretty-hard to test-out stuff in mandrake if your running a
different os.
I'll assume you purchased it, therefore it comes with stuff like viavoice?
Office packages? staroffice?, openoffice? gnumeric?
programming packages? Quanta? other? gimp?

idiot, we all know you're lying ... it is commong knowledged, even
inside the circle of linux cretins who pay karma in cola, that windows
recognizes everything including your bad breath (specially peeter
cuntman's), and that linux is _years_ behind specially in the business
of detecting hardware ... try running linux with a serial ata drive
<lol> ... quit lying and stick to the facts, linux sucks circumcized
dick heads and you know it, that's why linux has such pathetic
marketshare and windows is king!
go ahead, talk to people on the street about linux, they'll all go:
leenouchs who?

It's no longer a question of windows or GNU, it's a question of *Unix* or GNU.

Maybe 5-10 years ago they would have, but most people read newspapers,
and almost *EVERYONE* knows what Linux is, and who Linus is, or do you
not read anything not printed by Microsoft Press?
Go talk to the people on the street about linux today and you'll more
likely get something like:
Linux? I heard about it, friend gave me a Knoppix/PCLinuxOS/Mandrake
Move LiveCD, and I've been getting used to it, I find I boot into
windows a lot less, especially with the MyDoom/Bagle/Netsky viruses
changing and coming out 5 times a day.
Go ahead, talk to the people on the street about Windows XP, they'll all go:
What? That insecure virus propagating OS with a crappy firewall, that
was to be such an 'improvement' on Windows 2000? Yeah, it was an interim
release so that they could fuck around for another 3-4 years on
Wronghorn, and now they want to 'Reload' me? I'm sick of my $1000
computer running a $200 OS acting like a $5 fisher-price toy.

what would you recommend for someone who uses virtualdub on windows... thanks

I'm not a video affictionado, but I'm sure some people in this newsgroup
would point out some good software.
I did a google search for "avi linux" and got this:
http://heroinewarrior.com/quicktime.php3
plus this:
http://www.emulinks.de/divx/
However, I also understand mplayer is pretty good too.
What I think you may run into as a problem is that mpeg, avi, wmv etc...
all expect money for using their standards, so although some players are
free (because everyone wants you to be able to read their proprietary
formats), the programs used for creating such files probably won't be free.
Your virtualdub is probably borrowing the "codecs" included in the windows
media player or quicktime, or other windows based programs.
As an example, you may be familiar with adobe pdf reader as free, but adobe
sells their pdf writer/construction program.
In linux, you have ghostwriter, but I like the command line "convert"
If you wish to create a video without paying for a program that creates a
certain coding type such as mpeg, asf, wmv, avi......., you may want to
think of divx.
Another option would be to run WINE, but if you're going to do that, you
might as well just run windows.
Guess the money you save on not having to run antivirus programs and
firewalls could go into buying yourself a shareware linux program.
I'm no expert on video, hopefully that helps, or perhaps someone has a
better solution.
