Mike Cox helps fix 2.6 kernel. Patch for a big bug!
Posted by Mike Cox on November 26th, 2003

When I built the kernel the way Linus Torvalds instructed (make
xconfig, make bzImage, make module, make modules_install) I had
problems with my screen being black. I then compiled my Linux 2.6
kernel Terry's way (make menuconfig, make), and once again I
encountered problems.

I realized that the kernel was not recognizing my monitor correctly,
and that it is a bug in the kernel monitor drivers. My monitor was
being misdiagnosed by the kernel as a VESA and it is not. This bug
was in the 2.4 kernel, but I forced the kernel to choose the correct
one in order for it to work.

Currently I, Mike Cox, a former WindowsAdvocate and Win32 programmer
am writting a patch for the kernel as we speak. Read the Kernel
Mailing List for my email detailing the problem, and my patch which
will be on there quite soon.

My experience programming in the sophisticated Windows enviroment has
given me the ability to help vastly improve the Linux kernel (which is
my new hobby).

A good start would be figuring out if you are talking about the 2.4
kernel, or the 2.6. When you figure that out, let us know.
