New to me PC with XP Pro
Posted by Colin Coady on March 5th, 2004

Bought a 2nd hand PC with XP Pro installed. Want to update
with current patchs & updates available and I get cut off
by the NT Authorty/system message with a reboot in 30
seconds warning.
Does this mean that the OS is not a legitimate one? PC
didn't come with the original XP Pro CD.

If this is the case and I buy a new XP Pro package can I
install it over the existing OS so my other installed
programs don't have to be re-installed again and will I
then be able to get the on line updates & patchs? That was
a 2 day job in itself. OR Do I have to reformat the drive
& start over with the new OS?

Colin;
You most likely have Blaster.
Also, you do not have all the patches because a patch from a few
months ago resolves this.
You also are unprotected while connected to the internet since a
firewall also protects against Blaster.
Follow this to get rid of Blaster:

In addition to Jupiter's reply - note that you need only be connected to the
Internet for a few seconds in order to get hit. Turn on your firewall ASAP.
