Maybe it will go somewhere if they got their heads out of their asses and
port it over to X86 platform. Of course sure they would probably loose
their Office suite from M$ if that happened.

"go somewhere"? Apple is the largest retail vendor of BSD and the largest
retailer of computers pre-installed BSD. It seems the NetBSD people are
excited they have gotten XDarwin to run, and Apple's marketshare is up. It
would be interesting to see what would happen if Apple started
contributing to OpenOffice to produce an Aqua version.

Be a hell of a lot bigger if it ran on a X86 chip where the hardware is

Apple's entry machine starts at $799, and is currently the best "Value"
of PC or PPC.

Apple hardware is no longer "expensive", and that's been true for 5
years now.

Entry level Linux machine is $299. Less than half the cost.
Not in Australia it isn't.

Nope! You are not comparing the same items.
If you compare equal products, you will find the Apple is very similar
in price.
Then use eBay.
Prices are the same worldwide that way, only shipping is the difference.

$199 from Walmart in the US.
Considering what you get, it's still too expensive for my blood, too.
My personal preference keeps me away from an iMac. Even if I swallowed
my pride and went with it, it's still more expensive than a similar x86.
And have fun trying to build one from scratch.
If Apple wants to make some real sales, they can lower the prices
further. Until then, I'll keep watching Ebay: a lost sale to Apple.

Equal as in working, low costing new computer.
Apple's $799 machine may be a very good value for their money, but it's
simply not a low-cost solution.

Its an entry level system that does everything a "mom and pop" user needs.
Where is Apples equivalent in this market segment?
http://www.nextbyte.com.au/
Combo
$ 1,349.00
1GHz PowerPC G4
128MB SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo drive
<http://www.itwarehouse.com.au/warehouse
browse0.htm?ProductIndex=3&Index1=15&Index2=217>
Whitebox AMD XP-2400 System, 256MB, 40GB, DVD, CDRW, No CRT Black Beauty
Replacement Box $799.00, +$165 for a 17 inch monitor, +$25 for a linux
preinstall. Total $989. Want it with a "Superdrive"? Add $179 to the
price.
Both quotes are in Australian dollars. I've seen both systems, the Athlon
runs rings around the eMac. The eMac is prettier, but much less
configurable/upgradeable.
Minimum cost for me to run OSX $1349
Minimum cost for me to run Linux $0. I've got 5 systems now that can run
it, and people keep giving me more of the damn things. If you are happy
paying Apples prices that is fine. But don't expect anyone who actually
purchases x86 hardware, and knows what it costs, to believe you when you
tell them Mac is as cheap.
Have you seen the prices for internationally shipping a computer?? Why
would I add a small fortune to the cost of a system to end up with
unsupported hardware, or hardware that I would have to pay internationasl
shipping on twice to get fixed if anything goes wrong?

To be fair the $199 Walmart systems lack a monitor.
Much the same feeling here. I actually hate the look of iMac/eMacs, but my
brother in law's G4 boxes are solid, pleasing, powerful enough, and bloody
expensive.

Alright. $199 from Walmart and <$50 for some 17" monitors on Ebay ($70
or more after shipping).
My wife has a G4. We paid $1995 or thereabouts when we got it. It's
been solid as hell. The only problem I had was the CD drive went goofy
once (removed it and put it back and it's been solid ever since) and
it's a real nightmare to get a drive into a slot that's near the front
of the case (I did that to add an experimental linux install once). And
the RAM was so low we had to go get some additional just to make the
box useful. Then we needed software because there was too little to do
anything graphical (this was OS 9 days). By the time it was usable and
stocked it cost about $2500.
That's why I hesitate to get anything for me. I want one to toy around
with, not to do anything useful. Productivity on one is the wife's
department. I detest the look of iMac and eMac, so those are out. That
leaves me looking for used G3/G4 on Ebay. I'll get my software there,
too. So Apple loses all around when I finally find the one that suits
me.
