the boxes for personalize windowsupdate are shaded gray
and not accessable also under the automatic updates tab
allareas are shaded gray and unaccessable please help
this is making me crazy.

The error may occur because the language-setting in Internet Explorer is
missing.

To add a language

Internet Explorer, select Tools-->Internet Options, and click the
"Languages" button.

Add a language to the list if empty.



You may also take a look at the Windows Update.log file for any current
errors.

To view the log file:

Copy and paste "%windir%\windows update.log" (w/o the quotes)
into the Internet Explorer address bar and hit Enter.

Scroll down to the current date and look for the error being reported.

Next, Look for the error message in the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Please try the suggestions listed. If error persists please post the error
message from the log file.
