Q831167: where is it advertised ?
Posted by Mike S. on March 1st, 2004

Hi,

A friend of mine talked to me about another IE patch (Q831167) published on
2004-02-07, which is one week AFTER the cumulative Q832894.

I wonder why this update doesn't appear on Windows Update, Windows Update
Catalog and even IE downloads page (where the latest patch announced is
still Q832894).

Why is it so ??

Is there *another* place where one should look for patches, updates, etc..
??

BTW, I'm running under Win98SE.

TIA !

Hi

Sometimes, hotfixes isn't listed at Windows Update, don't ask me
why because I have no idea.

Q831167 fixes a bug introduced by Q832894, but it does not contain
the complete Q832894, so it needs to be added after Q832894 (and if
you are not affected by this problem, you don't need to install it)

Q831167 will be included in the next cumulative update for
Internet Explorer.

You can read more about it here (download link as well):

That's exactly what I'm complaining about ! (not that you don't know, but
that they aren't listed !!)

If one has to look elsewhere than WindowsUpdate and IE downloads to find
about availiable patches, it defats the purpose of those two sites.

And this makes me wonder how many patches goes unnoticed by the otherwise
well intentioned user.

What are the other MS sites one should look at to find about such patches to
Windows or IE ?

Hi

Well, there is no "central" place to look, this type of fixes are
released in the Knowledge Base (only), the best thing to keep up
with what is new or updated there is to subscribe to an e-mail
notification from http://www.kbalertz.com/default.aspx and hope
you pick those updates up from there.

I usually check the Security Bulletin.
Any revisions are usually listed there.
For example I found the link to Q831167 there.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-004
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894)
Issued: February 2, 2004
Updated: February 18, 2004
