I found a way to get my newly reformatted WinME computer
to install updates from the MS update site. Like 100s of
others, I could see that the site would begin downloading,
quit, and then say "did not install ... try again". I
have now installed all needed updates, which was about 23
or so. How? I have a cable modem through Cox.net, and I
also am subscribed to AOL. ONLY IF I WAS LOGGED ONTO AOL
WOULD MY UPDATES INSTALL. I DID NOT INSTALL THROUGH AOL --
I INSTALLED THROUGH MY IE BROWSER, BUT I HAD TO HAVE AOL
LOGGED ON in the background. This was repeated about 8
times with total consistency. For example, I was
connected to the update site, had my updates selected,
tried to download, download stalled, said "Did not
install ... try again". And then I logged onto AOL in the
background, went back to update screen, hit "install now",
and it installed like a charm. EVERY TIME.
So, it looks like the problem is with the MS update site
to me.
