There is a difference between stupid and ignorant. The people you refer
to were ignorant. Everyone is ignorant on many subjects. I would bet that
even I know things about subjects that you know little about.
It would be wrong for me to call you stupid (on that basis). You are
wrong to call people stupid because through their ignorance, they became
infected.
