Repeated updates of KB828026
Posted by Tim Wentworth on February 19th, 2004

I keep getting a notification for a critical update to WMP - KB828026. I
have installed this at least six times, but it apparently doesn't install,
and I keep getting the notices. Others have had this problem, and the only
solution that has worked is renaming "wmp.dll", and then doing the update.
However, I tried this and it does not work for me.

Does anyone have an idea how I can solve this problem? At this point, my
only option appears to be turning off automatic updating, which I don't want
to do. Thanks.

Jupiter Jones,
I downloaded and installed KB828026 without problems on my computers.
My Son has three SUCCESSFUL KB828026 entries in his "View installation
history" and is still prompted to install KB828026. I have steered him to
your suggested webpage and hope this will resolve the situation.
Can you explain the cause of this problem?

Jupiter
All you do is to offer the same stupid suggestion to everyone. Isn't it obvious to you that this doesn't work? I've seen your name all over. Would you stop telling people to "try this"...IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!

Posted by Jupiter Jones [MVP] on February 19th, 2004

Mark;
It does work, just not always.
Are you sure "IT DOESN'T WORK" for everyone? Because it does work,
just not always.
Few report back so it is extremely difficulty to know the failure
rate.
Still others start new threads making tracking more difficult.

What else can I/we do? This is obviously a Microsoft gliche. Will Microsoft fix this with a corrective update, or will we be forced to put up with this nuisance for ever?

Posted by Jupiter Jones [MVP] on February 20th, 2004

Mark;
If it was a problem with all, that would be one thing, but the update
installs fine on most computers.
Since it works with many and not with others, the trick is to find out
what is different with those computers it does not work.\

I have one computer that I am having the exact same
problem on. KB828026 keeps appearing as a critical
update even though I have installed it several times both
manually and through the automatic update.

Mark (First Mark, Not Me) is right. Your fix does not
work. The fix on [support.microsoft.com] does not work.
I do not have a registry entry for KB828026. I have
tried reinstalling it with everything disabled including
the McAfee Anti-Virus software (v 7.1.0). It still
appears as a critical update.

Is is possible that the critical update files can get
corrupted?

Computer is a Dell Optiplex with Windows XP Service Pack
1 about two weeks old. After I set it up, I went out to
get all of the update and they all took except this one.

Regards,

Mark Hatfield

Microsoft is huge! I'm sure they are aware of this gliche. They know why it's happening to some & not to others. Will they put out a fix though???

Also, when I "View Installation History" it repeatedly
appears as successful.

I applied the manual update, so I should know tomorrow whether it worked or
not. I will report back either way.

Why are you getting upset at Jupiter? He's a volunteer and not
responsible for the issues or problems. He's trying to help. I know he
can speak for himself, but stop your whining.

So, then you should try and do more of the same.
Depending on your OS (which as usual none of you have bothered
to disclose) there are up to 3 modules involved with this update.
wmp.dll is only one of them.

Besides checking the versions of the modules which need to be copied
using the File Information in the KB article you could get more clues
from the Q828026.log file that the update creates.

If your OS is NTx you could also use MBSA.
Here's an excerpt from a previous post about that option:

<excerpt>
The bulletins usually recommend using the MBSA tool for doing this.
If it is going to be helpful I think that you may need to use it from the
command line.

<example>
D:\Program Files\Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer>mbsacli /hf -v -z
</example>

It may tell you what it thinks about the situation by looking at the versions
of the modules involved (not just the registry values.) Actually you could
do both by running it again without the -z switch.

<TITLE>303215 - Microsoft Network Security Hotfix Checker (Hfnetchk.exe) Tool Is Available</TITLE>
< http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q303215 >

You could also try finding out what all files had been changed on the day
and time that you did the updates. You can find other logs and clues that
way. A related file search that is often useful is name: *.log
containing: <patch number>.

On a slightly different tack you might consider downloading your updates
and installing them manually. That would give you more control about how
the installs could be done and possibly also give you better (or at least
different) diagnostics if they still aren't working.

Good luck

Mark;
A few have reported this as a fix from Don yesterday:
"The problem was with Norton Internet Security 2003, also
on the same computer. The fix is as follows.
1. Log on to NIS as supervisor.
2. Double click on Personal Firewall (even if disabled.)
3. Click on Advanced tab.
4. Click on General Rules.
5. Scroll down to "block access to secure sites" and
uncheck box.

That's it. No need to reboot."

Also if you have a 3rd party firewall, disable it AFTER enabling
Internet Connection Firewall if applicable:

Jupiter Jones,
I did report that I had successfully installed KB828026 on both my computers
(one a 2 months old laptop, the other a Dell Dimension 8100 upgraded to XP 8
months ago) but my son (also with Win XP laptop, less than 1 month old))
has experienced the problem reported in a number of posts during the past
few days.
We both have Norton Antivirus 2003 on the laptops and neither of us have
Norton Firewall installed, I have ISS's BlackIce Defender whereas my son
uses IE.6 inbuilt firewall.
I would like to have some idea of the cause before I accuse him of finger
trouble.

Hi Hilary
I gather from your post that you are not experiencing this problem with
KB828026. This discussion forum is about the only access point most people
have to air their the problems they experience with MS Updates, it also
serves as a feedback to MS when things go wrong. It's a pity that a MS
employee doesn't enter into the discussion.

I do not have Norton Internet Security. I installed two brand new identical
computers on the same day. On one the update applied properly. On the
other one it did not. Judging by the number of posts in this newsgroup
about this problem, this is not an isolated issue.

I understand the issues invovled. And yes..I am not having problems
with this update but I have had other problems. Some where I could find
solutions, some where I couldn't. Computers are not bullet proof. And
I do understand frustration.

What I don't understand is getting on someone's case who is trying to
help.
