Security Update 819696 before XP Update to DirectX9.0b version?
Posted by Parkers-Georgia & Bob on July 23rd, 2003

Question for the MVP's, please......

Security Update (critical) 819696 addresses an issue in DirectX9.0a, which I
currently have on my Windows XP Home machine. I have read the technical
stuff and am totally confused because it says that "if you do not have one
of the versions listed (and mine IS listed), you should upgrade to version
9.0b". I cannot find any page at Microsoft which addresses the "b" version
and what the changes are. However, when I scan for recommended updates, not
only do I get the prompt to install 819696, but also to then install the
WindowsXP update to version 9.0b of DirectX.

Do I need to do the version update? Is the critical update sufficient? And
if I am going to upgrade to 9.0b, should I install the critical update to
9.0a BEFORE I do the non-critical one?

This is extremely confusing and I hope someone here can give me some help
with it before I do it and mess up a perfectly functioning machine (well,
except for the problem created with 823980 which causes shortcut errors, but
I assume Microsoft will issue a corrected patch for that one!).

Help!
Georgia - thanks so much :-)

Georgia
I installed the DX 9.0b update and then refreshed the update page and the
819696 was no longer listed. I would take this to mean that the 9.0b update
incorporates the fix also.

Oops - I guess it is 821557. I just scanned and didn't get a "new" 821557
recommended in my list. Anyway - hopefully MS will be correcting that one
soon. Good catch on the "right error update".

OK, Bob - as in Bob & Georgia and another Earthlink subscriber too, I see!

Assume you had no issues with the 9.0b update then. I will wait and see
what I hear from the MSVP's, but your response makes a lot of sense! Thanks.

Just wanted to be sure, as who knows anymore if these patches solve problems
or create them.

As for the DirectX9.0b question, to corroborate what Bob states, according
to MS, DX9.0b includes the 819696 fix.

" The DirectX 9.0a security patch requires a previous installation of
DirectX 9.0 or 9.0a on Windows Server 2003 (all versions except Windows
Server 2003 64-bit editions), Windows XP (all versions except Windows XP
64-bit editions), Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), Windows 2000
Service Pack 4 (SP4), or Windows Millennium Edition. The use of the
DirectX 9.0b package is preferred because it provides additional
non-security core graphics and DirectShow fixes. "

In plain English ... if you have DirectX 9.0 or 9.0a, the 9.0a patch CAN
be applied, but the 9.0b is preferred for the above reason. If you have
a version less than 9.0, then the 9.0b package is required.
You don't have to apply the 9.0a patch first before installing the 9.0b
update.

Helps, and yes, I just downloaded the 9.0b version, no problems so far, and
the patch for 9.0a is no longer showing up on my updates recommendations
list. I verified the successful install by running DxDiag.
Thanks to all for the help!!
