My 5 yr old daughter was given an old pc mfg in 1996,so it
has Windows 95.For all my limited efforts,I can not get
the sound up.Must I buy a sound card? I thought the widows
CD or the Restore CD & FLOPPY would install the
drivers, etc for sound.Any help would be greatly
appreciated! She only plays games but no sound takes the
fun out. HELP! WALT.

No, it may not be necessary to buy a sound card. If I remember correctly,
click on Start / Programs / Accessories / Entertainment / Volume Control and
make sure the speakers are not muted or the volume turned way down. Also,
are your speakers plugged in? If so, you certainly HAVE a sound card. Is
there a volume control on the speakers? If so, turn it up. Are the speakers
powered up? Some have batteries, some have an external power supply.

If there is no place to plug in the speakers, then you don't have a sound
card and you will have to buy one. For that vintage, it has to be ISA rather
than PCI - and ISA cards have almost disappeared from the market. However,
you should be able to pick a used one up for around $5 from a "Mom and Pop"
computer store.

If a sound card is already installed and the volume control settings are
correct, you probably need to re-install the sound card driver. That driver
may be included in your Windows 95 CD disk, or you may be able to download
it from the sound card manufacturer.

Regards.
