- Specify OS Only Updates
- Posted by Ben Blackmore on October 21st, 2003
Hi,
Is it possible to specify which updates are downloaded when running the
software updates service? I just syncronised the server and there are about
3000+ downloads, I gather this includes win98/me/2k & xp updates. On site we
only run Win2k, so I don't want to download the other OS updates, as it will
save time and disk space.
Is this possible?
Cheers
Ben

You cannot specify what content you download on the SUS server. SUS only
supports Windows 2000 and better clients. You can however, only approve
updates that are pertinent to your clients. Once the first "big bang"
download is completed, your server will take less time to sync. I am not
sure what you are running SUS on, but as of right now, the whole SUS folder
should only be about 625 meg. We aren't talking a HUGE amount of disk
space. This may be a function of SUS 2.0, but we are talking about content
that would fit on a CD.

Windows 2000 server SP4. I've managed to cut down the number of downloads
(only 184 rather than 3000+) by unchecking all the localised options, so I
only download english, rather than the german, french, koren.... Although
even after doing this it still downloaded .net framework for all the
different languages, rather than just the english download.
Its currently doing WinXP SP1, which is about 50% done, shame you can't
filter out certain O/S types, would be useful!
Cheers
