When I bring up Microsoft Explorer, I always get a message
that there is an svchost error. What could be causing this?

I have seen the MaxBlast Worm do that exact tell tail sign.
Highly Recommend you get patched and update all applicable
Microsoft updates for your particular OS ASAP...

Also run a complete Virus scan...
If that doesn't work definately run a repair on IE can
hurt.
