syncback shows MS how its done
Posted by kevin bailey on February 4th, 2004

finally found something similar to rsync for windows - called syncback from
tucows.

it's free which is important cos after buying a so-called operating system
i refuse to pay extra for something as fundemental as sychronisation.

this app is simpler cleaner and far more usefule and usable than
briefcase/offline files.

the difference is the same as the philosophical difference between
windows/MS and unix/linux.

briefcase and offline files are bloated - they assume they know how we all
do our work.

Of course, one has to wonder why you didn't just use RoboCopy, which is
also free, which Microsoft gives away for free, which will do all that
synchronization for you and will even allow you to schedule jobs.

All for free.

Furthermore, it allows you to sync between *nix and MS-Windows boxes, as
well as *nix<->*nix or MS<->MS

Gui frontend, or cli, your choice. Bidirectional, (unlike rsync) and
happily uses ssh as a transport mechanism for security.

Yes, but saying "the OP" everywhere "you" or "your" is used kind of wrecks

Fair enough.

The amusing part, was that "My Briefcase" was touted as such an

If you are clicky-pointy, use unison's GUI client, if you prefer CLI,
use unison, or rsync (unison is bidi, rsync isn't) There are GUI
frontends to rsync of course, and rsync has a world of options that make
some things possible that robocopy/unison etc simply don't do. Like
secure transport via ssh, or checksumming of files. Robocopy looks nice,
in an MS only environment, if you don't have access to rsync... It has
some nice feature to interface with ntfs. But that's about all it has
over rsync.
