- Test drive of an eMac
- Posted by GreyCloud on February 22nd, 2004
I've been absent for a while, testing out a new eMac with OSX3 on it.
One thing I noticed is that the o/s is very stable and has been up for a
few days. None of the apps have caused any problems.
What is missing is an OS X newsreader. MISSING!
I had to resort to using a Classic Mac 9 NetScape 4.77 newsreader for
now. I've downloaded slrn for OS X and I'm reading about the setup of
the newsreader. Too bad Apple couldn't wrap a nice GUI around slrn.
Xcode is nice, but getting the editor fonts set correctly so that they
can be seen is a bit of a mystery for now. The IDE is good for
C/C++/ObjectC/Java.
Another item missing... a media player for streaming audio on the net.
MISSING!
Had to go to Maggot$oft and download theirs. Oddly enough, it doesn't
look gawdy at all and not like the XP version that can irritate you.
The emacs is a bare bones one. No xemacs at all.
I'd rather have Nedit myself, but at least there is vim.
Gcc 3.3 is loaded, but not g77. I'd have to download g77... no big
deal.
Python, Ruby, Perl to name a few are in there. The program installer
works great and sets up everything if it is made for OS X. The fonts
are very nice and xterm takes advantage of them properly.
But the window border color schemes are not changeable unless you go to
a site to download a skin changer, which may make the o/s unstable they
claim.
There aren't as many CLI commands that Solaris has in the /bin
directory, but I have to keep my perspective on the over all means of
use here.
So I'm now looking at refurbing the old HP Pavillion and installing
Linux on it.
I need to remove the winmodem and install a real modem. I already have
RH 7.1 but I don't know if Suse latest version will run on a
233Mhz/128Mb machine.

Yes OSX is incredibly stable. my PB is on 24/7 and the only reboots are
for Apple's updates.
I tried out a few, but MacSOUP and Halime were the only two that
appeared to offer offline reading which I need since I've only got 56k
dialup.
MacSOUP is a bit quirky and takes a little getting used to, the tree
view is nice. None of them match KNode, though
I got RealPlayer. Mainly because it wasn't from MaggotSoft. It works.
But yes, why doesn't OSX come with a player?
Enjoy your eMac. OSX is 10,000% better than anything from Microsoft, and
is a worthy adjunct to Linux.

I can agree there about KNode. I downloaded directly from Apples'
download site a newsreader called Unison. Also got slrn downloaded.
Just haven't got around to using it as Unison was so much easier to use.
It doesn't do offline reading that I know of.
I'll have to go and download that one.
The biggest reason was that the old HP was getting rickety and slow.
Even an o/s re-install really didn't help it. I didn't want to put our
assets in jeopardy while doing online transfers, so I bought the eMac
for its security and ease of use for the wife.
If this IBM gives out, which it may never do, I'll get a custom built
machine without M$ o/s and put on the latest Suse. I'm very tempted to
continue with Solaris, but they haven't kept up with the times like
Linux has.

You have no idea do you? Bet you haven't even tried a non-ms os to see
what you don't have to do to keep it running, virus free etc...
Now be honest. Or I'll call you an idiot idiot.

Simplest way to get one is to use Mozilla. It's available from mozilla.org
as a native OS/X program. Not too bad, either.

Yes, I don't want to get into the Leafnode scenario mainly because I've
not yet built up enough confidence to sort out Fink and XFree on this
machine, Nor do I want to be dependent on a server machine, it's not
much use when I'm not home.

My next SuSE will be when kernel 2.6 has been fully integrared into the
distro, which'll be 9.1 or 9.2 at least. Until then 8.2 is doing fine.
