"Thanks for your interest" page from MS Update -- try using the XP help page to get update to run
Posted by Jun Hogyu on August 21st, 2003

Someone in this group gave me a link to a secure page to download the Update
program after a new install of Win 98 SE on an old laptop. When I first
tried to use update in Internet Explorer, I got a screen with the subject
line title, implying that I wasn't running an OS that would work with
update. The link allowed me to download the V4 updater, and all was well.
Unfortunately, I can't find the post here anymore.

Then last night, XP started showing me the same thank you page when I tried
to update through IE, although I've had the updater installed for over a
year on that machine with no problems until now.

If anyone else is having the same problem in XP -- I'm not talking about
failure to download a patch or stalling in the middle of a patch or anything
except a one-paragraph page that says "Thank you for your interest in
Windows Update" -- I found that I could get into the installer through XP
help on the start menu. One of the menu choices on the main help page was a
link to the updater that worked.

If you are comfortable editing the registry you may resolve this issue by
deleting the
following registry key. Before making any modifications to your registry,
make sure to export this key to a safe location by clicking "Export" on the
RegEdit "File" menu.

Deleting the "Post Platform" key removes certain attributes from the end of
the User-Agent
string used by Internet Explorer to identify its version in Internet
communications.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet
Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

I went to the windows update page and installed the two new updates
with no trouble. I rebooted and tried to check to see it they were
installed. Instead I got that "Thanks for your interest page" but before
I could read all of it I heard a beeping sound like an alarm.I am very
new to computers so I am not sure if this is a sound I should recognize.
I just shut down and waited a few minutes and logged on and everything
was fine. Can anyone tell me what that alarm sound was and what caused
it? Most of what I know about pcs I have learned here and at gingers
group. Thank you for the help. FYI I am on Windows XP Till later, lila

I'm having the same prob as the OP, but deleting this key does not help. I'm
running XP Home (SP1), and am running into the "Thank you for your
interest..." page when using this link:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm

I can reach:

https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

But I'm receiving Certificate warnings upon opening.

David,

I followed the instructions in the KB article and was able to get the Update
page to load. I successfully downloaded/installed the current cummulative
patch for IE6, rebooted. Now when I go the Update page I'm getting the
"Thanks for your interest..." page again.

What gives?

Bruce

For now just clear cached files like you have before... I'll speak to
Microsoft with regard to producing a fix.
