Trouble accessing secure sites
Posted by Josh D. on February 9th, 2004

When I run windows update an error (0x800C0005) stops the
process right away. I am also unable to check hotmail,
log into MSN messenger and I'm pretty much blocked from
any secure site. I can however check my hotmail through
outlook express. Anti-virus software was run and nothing
was found. Also ran Ad-ware a few times to remove some
bugs. I'm running windows XP with IE 6.0. In the windows
update log the error that shows up is (Error
0x80072EFD). I've followed some of the suggested
procedures that were recommended to people with similar
problems but with no success.

I'm having same issue. I have emptied temp internet
files, deleted cookies, ran SpyBot and Ad-Ware, cleaned
up my hard drive, checked all of my security settings and
internet options I can think of and still to no avail. I
cannot access any secure site but I can download hotmail
just fine. Does anyone have anymore suggestions? I even
tried to restore my system to an earlier date but I can't
even do that for some reason.

My exact problem, too. And it's interesting that I too am
getting that same error when I try to do the Windows
update. Hmmm.

Mine is a new computer (Win XP Pro) and so it's my first
attempt to go to secure sites with this computer. I have
3 internet service providers and they all have the same
problem - "The page cannot be displayed". So, it isn't
the ISP. My other computer can access all these sites
with the same ISP.

I found in the knowledge base for IE6.0 that it could be
you don't have 128-bit encryption or your user profile is
corrupted.

For the 128-bit encryption, go to help...about in IE6.0
and make sure the cypher strength is 128-bit. IF not,
update ie6.0 to that level. My bank told me to try to go
to www.oasis.cfree.com and see if I can see a picture come
up on the page. If not, then my 128-bit encryption is
messed up. That's their test site for the 128-bit. I
can't see the picture, even tho my help...about shows 128-
bit encryption is installed.

My bank also says I need to install service pack 1 for
internet explorer 6.0 to fix the 128-bit encryption
problem. I did and it didn't help.

For the corrupt user possibility, go to Control
Panel...users and delete your user profile. When you sign
on again with it, it will create a new one. Only problem
is, I think you're going to lose all your desktop settings
and icons. So, instead I created a new admin user and
tried logging on to it, but still couldn't get to secure
sites.

Dell has spent all day on the phone with me and we've
tried a ton of things including a repair of Windows. So
far, still no progress.

Hope something in here works for you.

Hi Dallen,

Verify the steps outlined in the following KB article.

HOW TO: Troubleshoot Situations Where You Cannot Complete MSN Sign-up or
Connect to SSL Secured (128-Bit) Web Sites by Using Internet Explorer in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444

You can also try running the System File Checker.

Run the System File Checker (you may be prompted for XP CD)

Click START > RUN
Type "SFC /Scannow" (w/o quotes)
Press OK

Let XP check for all system files.

Please post back the results.
