trying to install windows security updates
Posted by dave steele on February 16th, 2004

I have Windows 98 Second Edition on my computer. When I
leave it on overnight and go to use it the next day it is
slow to respond to the mouse and keyboard, and usually I
end up having to reboot in frustation. Once I reboot it is
fine. So I decided to update with the latest Windows
security features to make sure I don't have a virus. When
I went to the Windows Update page on the Microsoft web
site and tried to install the critical updates, the
updates would successfully download from the site but then
they would never install. The download bar would be 100%
complete but no progress would ever be shown on the
install bar - the computer would just freeze. I even
tried just installing one update that should have taken
just one minute. No luck. Any advice?

Hi Dave,

This is a known issue with an older version of AOL.
Access Windows Update using Internet Explorer:

After signing on to AOL click the Start button then click the Windows Update
Icon. This will start Windows Update using the version of Internet Explorer
that comes with the operating system.
