two problems encountered.
unable to scan for updates despite i have enable
automatic windows xp updates activated. i used to receive
updates from windows.
windows xp stopped connecting to dial up modem although i
have cable a dial up modem is useful if we are having a
problem with cable isp providers. although i have tried
inewitz hypertrm and even modifying systems registery
regedit. i am not able to install modem thru creating
connection. technical support and my isp say its
microsoft. by the way the code problem is 320558 for
knowledge base. what shall i do?

First off, can you go to c:\windows\windows update.log and scroll down the
bottom. Look for any errors and post the relevant lines here if you find
any.
Remove the modem in device manager and then do a reboot. It should detect if
when it boots up, if not do a Add New Hardware.
