I am unable to defrag hard disk because of "disk errors".
I get a dialogue box instructing me to run scan disk.
When I run scan disk, it runs for hours and never finishes.
What's worng here? Please help.

into Safe Mode, then run scan disk, then run defrag which
worked for me. I have windows ME and to get into safe
mode I reboot the computer and then as SOON as the
manufacturer's logo comes up I hit the F8 key several
times.... Don't know if this will help, but pretty sure
it can't hurt anything and may be worth a try until a more
knowledgable person responds to you...Seems like things
like scan disk & defrag work better in safe mode.
