Unable To Download New Version of Windows Update to Windows Me
Posted by Paul on September 19th, 2003

When I start Windows Update, an ActiveX error message
displays saying the IE setup wont allow ActiveX scripts on
this page to run.

Then a window displays inviting me to download the latest
version of Windows Update. I accept and the ActiveX error
message (above) appears again. Thereafter, I'm in a loop.

Any thoughts ?

Paul,

Check to see that Discuss is not enabled in IE. Open IE, click View,
point to Explorer Bar, Discuss. If it's checked, click on it to disable it.

If that does not resolve the issue go here and follow the steps for your
version of Windows :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585

NOTE: Under the " Remove the Windows Update ActiveX Controls " heading
the correct location for the iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll files in Windows
ME is the WINDOWS\System folder. For all versions of Windows remove the
Update Class file found in WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. Right click
it and choose Remove.

YOU MUST temporarily disable your antivirus program (re: Norton &
Mcafee) prior to any attempt to access Windows Update, download, or
install updates or software. Failure to do so will result in the
software controls (iuctl.cab) becoming corrupted, the update files
becoming corrupted or damaged, incomplete and damaged installations of
updates.
